Ceramic Preforms

Ceramic Preform Technology
Century 3+, LLC is utilizing its proprietary Ring Extruder technology to revolutionize the process of making ceramic preforms.

What is a preform?
A preform is essentially a sponge, made of ceramic materials, that when infiltrated with molten metal, it provides reinforcement to a metal component. The ceramic reinforcement brings wear resistance, increased stiffness, and improved performance at elevated temperatures.

What is the Ring Extruder Advantage?

The 3+ Ring Extruder enables a continuous process to manufacture preforms. The traditional method is a batch process, which brings a concern of batch-to-batch variation.

The Ring Extruder can produce ceramic preform materials at rates of 100’s of pounds per hour, perfectly mixed, perfectly metered – repeatable and reliable material every time.

Another advantage of the Ring Extruder is versatility. The Ring Extruder disperses fiber clumps; has the capability to mix fibers, particles, and many different binders and fillers. The extruded material can be extruded as a sheet, die cut, wrapped, squeezed or further extruded allowing continuous processing never seen before in the preform business.

Potential Applications for Ceramic Preforms:

  • Brake drums
  • Cylinder liners
  • Clutch plates
  • Connecting rods
  • Vehicle and Body Armor Applications
  • Aluminum or Magnesium Piston Reinforcement

Benefits of using Ceramic Preforms in your vehicle components:
  • Significant reductions in weight
  • Increased fuel efficiency
  • Increased wear resistance
  • Reduced maintenance costs
  • Increased payloads
  • Improved Elevated Temperature Performance
  • Significant increase in stiffness (modulus) over monolithic alloy
